New Learn Dashboard: Course Administrator Changes

1. Admin Navigation Changes

Administrative tools have been reorganized in the updated Learn interface.

  • The previous right-side Administration block has been removed.
  • Course administration options are now located within:
    • The “More” tab in the course navigation bar (top of the course page)
    • The Settings (gear) icon on applicable pages

Common options such as Edit Settings, Participants, Grades, and Reports are now grouped under the “More” menu.

Important: Select “Turn editing on” from the top right of the course page to enable editing and access activity-level settings.

2. Course Layout and Navigation Updates

Course navigation has been streamlined to improve usability.

  • Course sections are accessed through the course index (left-side panel) and top navigation.
  • The left-side index allows quick navigation between sections and can be expanded or collapsed.

Course layout (e.g., Topics format, weekly format) is still managed through Settings (at top) → Course Format, but the overall navigation experience is now consistent across courses in Vanderbilt Learn.

3. Course Display and Dashboard Enhancements

Course Cards (Dashboard View):
Courses now appear as tiles on the Learn dashboard.

  • Course administrators can upload a custom course image via Edit Settings.
  • If no image is added, a default image will display.

Completion Tracking / Progress Indicators:
Students may see progress indicators on course cards depending on course setup.

  • Progress is based on completion tracking settings within the course.
  • Administrators should review completion settings to ensure accuracy, especially if activities are hidden or restricted.

4. Forum Updates

Forum activities include enhancements to grading and communication tools.

  • Whole Forum Grading allows instructors to assign grades based on overall participation.
  • Updated interaction features include:
    • Sorting and organizing discussions
    • Private replies (if enabled)
    • Attachments and expanded editor tools
    • Audio/video responses through the advanced editor
