Creating a Quiz

Body

The quiz activity enables a teacher to create quizzes comprising questions of various types, including multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical.

The teacher can allow the quiz to be attempted multiple times, with the questions shuffled or randomly selected from the question bank. A time limit may be set.

Each attempt is marked automatically, with the exception of essay questions, and the grade is recorded in the gradebook.

The teacher can choose when and if hints, feedback and correct answers are shown to students.

Creating a quiz is a two step process. The first step is naming the quiz and choosing the quiz settings that govern how the student interacts with the quiz. The second step is adding questions and items to the quiz.  Questions are then contained within a question bank.  The question bank allows you flexibility with your quizzes - you can randomize questions, so that each student has a different copy of the quiz.  You can also use the same question bank at different times in your course, so you can reuse questions without having to rewrite them.

Add the Quiz Activity

First, navigate to the section of the course where you want the quiz to appear.

Make sure Edit mode is enabled. Select the + icon in the appropriate course section, and then select Activity or resource.

Enter a name for the quiz in the Name field. You may also enter a description and choose whether the description should appear on the course page.

Configure the quiz settings as needed. Available settings include:

  • Timing
  • Grade
  • Layout
  • Question behavior
  • Review options
  • Etc.

When finished, select Save and display.

If you have not created a question bank yet, you need to do so. The Question bank allows a teacher to create, preview and edit questions in a database and use them in the quiz activity. Questions are organized in categories and subcategories similar to the way files are stored in folders and subfolders. These categories may be limited to being used on the site, course or quiz level. Be mindful of which category your questions are in. Quiz level question banks will only follow that specific quiz, you will not be able to apply that question bank to another quiz in the future.

Add Questions to the Quiz

After saving the quiz, select Add question.

On the Questions page, locate the Add menu on the right side of the page. Select Add, and then select From question bank.

Use the Category filter to locate the question-bank category containing the questions you want to use. Begin typing the category name and select the appropriate category from the list.

If you also want to display questions stored in its subcategories, select Also show questions from subcategories.

Select Apply filters to display the matching questions.

Select the checkbox beside each question you want to include in the quiz. You can also use the checkbox at the top of the list to select all questions displayed on the current page.

If the category contains several pages of questions, use the page controls to review the remaining questions.

After selecting the questions, select Add selected questions to the quiz.

The selected questions will now appear on the quiz’s Questions page. Review the questions, point values, total points, and maximum grade before making the quiz available to students. Once done hit Save.

Note* - If your question is not appearing on the quiz after Saving go to Question Bank > Search category > Make sure the status is set as ready not draft. If it is set as draft it will not appear for others.
