This article explains how eligible Vanderbilt University users can claim and activate their ChatGPT EDU account using their vanderbilt.edu email address and Single Sign-On (SSO).
Audience
This article applies to:
who are eligible for ChatGPT EDU and have an active institutional account. Eligibility aligns with Microsoft O365 A5 licenses.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure:

You have an active institutional email address (e.g., @vanderbilt.edu)

You can successfully log in to your VU SSO (Okta)

You are an eligible member of VU students, faculty, staff
Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to ChatGPT

Open a web browser

Go to: https://onevu.vanderbilt.edu
Step 2: Sign In Using Your Institutional Credentials

Enter your VU email address or VUNetId when prompted

Select Next
Step 3: Authenticate with Single Sign-On (SSO)

Complete multi-factor authentication (MFA), if prompted
-
After authentication you will be redirected to your OneVU dashboard
Step 4: Click the OpenAI tile on your OneVU dashboard

Review the applications available to you on your OneVU My Apps Dashboard

Click the ChatGPT tile on your OneVU dashboard
Step 4: Complete Account Setup

Selected a ChatGPT workshop, if prompted

Review and accept the ChatGPT Terms of Service

Confirm any requested profile information

Your account will automatically be associated with ChatGPT EDU
No license key or manual activation is required.
Verify Your ChatGPT EDU Access
After logging in:

Open Settings in ChatGPT
-
Verify your plan indicates ChatGPT EDU
-
EDU features will be available automatically based on your institution’s configuration
Common Issues
“You are not eligible for this plan”

Confirm you used your institutional email address

Ensure your institutional account is active

Log out and sign in again using SSO
SSO Login Fails

Verify your institutional password works for other SSO services

Clear your browser cache or try a private/incognito window

Contact your institution’s IT Service Desk if the issue continues
Account Created Without EDU Access
This can occur if a personal email address was used previously.

Log out of ChatGPT

Log back in using your institutional email and SSO

If the issue persists, contact the IT Service Desk
