How to Get Started with OneVU powered by Okta (User Onboarding Guide)

Purpose

This article provides step-by-step instructions for new users to onboard to OneVU powered by Okta. OneVU provides secure access to university systems using Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). 

Target Audience

  • Vanderbilt University Community  

    • Faculty and Staff 

    • Undergraduate Students 

    • Graduate and Professional Students 

  • VUIT Internal Knowledge 

Prerequisites

  • Active @vanderbilt.edu email address and password 

  • Access to a personal or work mobile device (for Okta Verify (MFA) enrollment)   

Instructions

1: Navigate to https://onevu.vanderbilt.edu, to access the OneVU Portal 

2: Sign in with your @vanderbilt.edu email and password 

3: Enroll in Okta Verify Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) 

  • After logging in, Okta will prompt you to set up Okta Verify MFA 

  • Click “Set Up” under Okta Verify 

  • A screen with a QR code will appear. Leave this window open but you will switch to your mobile device for the next steps. 

4: Install Okta Verify 

  • On your mobile device, install the Okta Verify app:

  • The application icon  
  • Once downloaded, you will open the application and select “Get Started.” 

  • Then select ”Next.” 

  • Select “Add Account.” 

  • Select “Organization” 

  • Select "Skip.” 

  • Then select “Yes, Ready to Scan.” Your mobile device will likely require you to allow the application to use your camera. 

5: Link Okta Verify to Your Account 

  • In your browser, continue the MFA setup and select Okta Verify 

  • Open the app and scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen 

    • Note: We highly recommend allowing the application to send you push notifications so that when Okta Verify sends you a push, it comes through on your phone without navigating to the app.  

  • Now, go back to your computer screen and click "Continue."

6: Link a non-VU email address

  • Enter your non-Vanderbilt email address. This email will be used if you have lost access to your account. Then, you can choose "Finish." 

    • Note: To complete the secondary email address registration, you will want to navigate to your personal email account, find the email sent to you from One VU, and select "confirm the email.” 

7: Explore Your OneVU Dashboard 

  • Once logged in, you’ll see a dashboard of all applications you can access. Click any icon to launch an app with SSO.
