Purpose
The purpose of this article is to define the process of requesting a network port activation.
Target Audience
Description
This article explains how to request activation of an existing network port. Wired/wall data ports are provided for users that require this type of connectivity. Standard wired connections are currently provided at 1 GB/s. This service is available to Vanderbilt University faculty, staff, and students to request. If a network wall outlet and port is not available, or if additional wall outlets and ports need to be added/repaired, please submit a cable installation request.
Resolution or Procedure Steps
Provide the details printed on the faceplate of the wall jack you want activated. The easiest way to provide this information would be to take a picture of the wall plate/port, and include it as an attachment in the Activate Network Port request.
Common Issues/Troubleshooting
Issue: the port is not working after activation:
-
Make sure the ethernet cable being used is in good condition and tested
-
Visually inspect the wall plate/port and cable ends if possible, to identify any bent or missing pins. If the wall plate/port is damaged, submit a Network Connectivity request to repair the wall plate/port.
Additional Information
“V” numbers on a wall jack, such as “V01” or “V02” identify legacy voice ports and are not data ports. Data ports are usually green or yellow in color and are identified by a “D” number such as “D01” or “D02”.
